Reflection

I found this task extremely interesting and I was very engaged with it throughout this semester. I mainly believe this is because of my interest in the question I was attempting to answer and the message I was trying to convey (the effect of exercise on cognitive function). This is something that I have experienced, with my cognitive performance having a direct correlation to my exercise and physical wellbeing.

Doing secondary research on the effects of exercise both as a way of life and the chemical effects of exercise also drove me to spend quality time doing this assignment. This assignment gave me reason to do research into how the human body works and how it adapts- specifically in terms of brain plasticity and how neurotransmitters work when presented with stimuli before and after exercise. The study of rats and their brains was also an interesting point for me which I further investigated whilst doing this project.

It was also very interesting and gratifying conducting my own survey and primary research, giving me an insight into how data and information is collected and the importance of doing so in an ethical manner. Using the data to make deductions was quite enjoyable – however I wish I received more survey responses so I could make more in depth and credible deductions, specifically in reference to more people doing the ‘iq test’ before and after exercise. This could be a fault of my own by not putting my survey out enough or earlier, however I worked with what I received and am happy with how it integrated into my opinion piece.

I hope that my opinion piece is credible evidence for the positive impact exercise can have on cognitive function, specifically related to university students and their studies. My main objective for the opinion piece was to provide evidence and use the data as a way to convince students how exercise increase efficiency, focus, concentration, etc.; all things that improve university study. In my opinion piece, I also wanted an emphasis on how exercise increases wellbeing and balance, which I believe are notions that university students have a high chance of struggling with

I insured that the conclusion of the opinion piece had a strong theme of tailoring to the individual, making sure readers know that the opinion piece isn’t trying to convince them to now partake in intense and unrealistic exercise, rather pushing for a routine which is sustainable and comfortable.
