Part 1 : Project Pitch

Up until July this year, I had never yet played a PC game. I just never jumped on the bandwagon and my inability to play “League” or “Runescape” has undeniably left me out of my inner friend circle. To give it some perspective, Ive always been a Nintendo wii kind of gal so when we all grew up and no one messaged me to jump on Mario kart anymore, my gaming career came to an end. While I do pick up controllers quite easily, the thought of having a whole keyboard to control to generate response, does mean I’m a complete noob in todays generation of gaming.

For my DA, I will be completely focusing on iPhone apps derived from original console based games such as Mario Kart, Cooking Mama and Pokemon Go. Making sure I am subjecting myself to differences, similarities, glitches, graphics and so on. I will be critically analysing the relationship between the two generations specifically within the viewpoint of an OG consumer.

With all this in mind, the aim of this experience is to compare the authenticity and whether it lives up to acclaimed reputation. Whether or not a strong link is perpetrated, as well as how well can a remote based game be converted to remoteless. Investigating the idea that poor aesthetics respectively may be associated with older games, as expected. New derived games with enhanced graphics can be a source of nostalgia for current users. In older gaming experiences indirectly (via memories) and even directly (via replaying or recreating experiences) elicits nostalgia, which in turn contributes to players’ self optimisation and enhanced well-being.

Research and Ethics

In the beginning of this subject I decided to brainstorm ideas around the notion of dance and how creators are utilising it amongst all platforms for content, in particular on the now viral app TikTok. After identifying my media niche, I began my ethnographic research, which included narrowing my field site and planning my approach for future research. In this post I will be outlining some of my background research in regard to understanding lifestyle influencers and also illustrating some of the ethical issues associated with this.

Background Research

Today, lifestyle content creators are more than just an individual posting about a luxurious lifestyle. They are Influential marketers that post their lives on various platforms to entertain their viewers as well as support brand dealerships. Influencers in social media are people who have built a reputation for their knowledge and expertise on a specific topic. “They make regular posts about that topic on their multiple social media channels and generate large followings of enthusiastic, engaged people who pay close attention to their content and postings.”

” (https://influencermarketinghub.com/what-is-an-influencer/). Hence, these influencers post content to social media for an audience that share the same interests.

Remi Cruz (MissRemiAshton) for instance shares most of her personal and professional life with the public eye on the internet. Her YouTube videos are based around beauty, fitness and vlog content. She takes viewers along her journey of weight loss, struggles, reviews and entertainment value related videos, moving houses and travel diaries. She gives her subscribers, a professional experience on YouTube then a very personal experience on podcasts, almost like you’re talking to her as a friend.

Ethical Issues

There are various ethical issues that are involved when doing ethnographic research on dance videos. Even though influencers make content available to a public audience there are still plenty of ethical difficulties. The National Statement (2007) describes ethical research as “more than simply doing the right thing. It involves acting in the right spirit, out of an abiding respect and concern for one’s fellow creatures”. As a result, the responsibility of each creator must have the dignity and act of human good to post in an ethically responsible matter. Even though ethical practices are in place to reduce risks there are, however, risks that could potentially harm participants such as acknowledgement, ownership, consent and intellectual property.

Dances videos are virtually impossible to legally claim as one’s own. The history of copyrighting dance in comparison to other art forms is quite recent: The Copyright Law of 1976 was the first to allow choreographers to protect their work, but even then, it was intended for ballets and other formally traditional and prestigious compositions. It does not include protections for “ordinary motor activities, social dances, commonplace movements or gestures, or athletic movements” —In summary, it’s why you’re able to do the moonwalk and the macarena without anybody suing you. Moreover, there are also ethical issues in relation to the influencer as well. For example, the issue of authenticity, social responsibility and influence. Which is why in my DA, I will be having a sit down talk video about some dances I have created that have drawn potential influence from their original creators.

Week 2

A global nervous system: from the telegraph to cyberspace

This week lecture emphasised on quite some memorable moments in history. The process of how the internet came to be what it is today and the impact it’s had on global communication and public networks. Not limited to boundaries such as everyday use but for the historical shift in the formation of network society. We also discussed the dramatic shift in perceptions of time and space caused by the rise of global information networks, giving rise to the metaphoric imagining of these networks as a global nervous system.

my remediation

The Internet has turned this generation’s existence upside down. It has revolutionised communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday communication. In almost everything I do, I use the Internet. This includes shopping, ordering food, posting, education and needless to say its been the pinnacle of existence during our 2020 covid19 pandemic. Before the Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to the minute.

Copyright Infringement

Back in September of 2019, a New York based professional photographer Robert O’Neil filed a lawsuit under the citation of copyright infringement against Gigi Hadid. The supermodel at the time had posted a picture which were owned and registered by O’Neil of her now ex-boyfriend, Zayn Malik onto the highlight system on Instagram stories. In the issued court documents, obtained by E! News, it’s stated, “This action arises out of Defendant’s unauthorized reproduction and public display of a copyrighted photograph of English singer and songwriter Zayn Malik”

The legal repercussions that took place following the lawsuit is that O’Neil wants 24-year-old Hadid wants to declare that she did infringe his copyrights by posting the photo. But Hadid declares that this “borderline harassment” is part of her daily life due to her job and that her privacy has been rudely intruded upon. The specific case went back and forth between Gigi’s management and the professional photographer. As the case continued, the photographer stated that he is also seeking to be awarded either “actual damages and Defendant’s profits, gains or advantages of any kind attributable to Defendant’s infringement of Plaintiff’s Photograph” or “statutory damages of up to $150,000.” The case was settled in court due to legal reason thecuse of works protected by copyright law without permission for a usage where such permission is required, thereby infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works.

The Medium is the Message I

In this week’s lecture, we studied Marshall McLuhan’s framework of understanding media, and discussed the trajectory and dynamics of the process of convergence.

https://twitter.com/FloraMaryLiu/status/1246393676240060416

So what does it mean to me?

So, the medium is the message — what does it mean?

Quite simply, to me it means that the way that we send and receive information is more important than the information itself. Where we were once consumers, consuming information by watching television or listening to the radio, in the 21st century we have now also become producers, creating our own information as well. For example, after binge watching somthing on Netflix that I visciously devoured, I will instantly take to the media ask for opinions and just communicate with fellow viewers.

What i found interesting is that digital media convergence allows news and content reach the public more efficiently. But unfortunately it enables the web to become a monopoly game and gives sanction to big companies to control media.

For McLuhan watching television changed the way we looked at the world. He said “It is impossible to understand social and cultural changes without a knowledge of the workings of media.”In McLuhan’s theory, he states that “One big gossip column that is unforgiving, unforgetful and from which there is no redemption”. In today’s world, everything is back tracked, everything you post online, stays online. In some cases, its resulted in in job dismissals, arrests and online abuse. The deleting of these tweets or comments has minimal effect.

The Medium is the Message II

Glitch art? A E S T H E T I C S !

This concept that the product of media can be shifted into conversation is actively based upon the fact that the media never stops! Its a constant catalyst for new discussion, fresh trends and arising styles. This weeks lecture, touched base on digital art and its processes, production and how it’s progression is substantial to the growth and diversity of a regional economy through the development of its creative industries.

So further more, here is my attempt on making a gif using the field of glitch.

A photo that is using digital and analog errors for aesthetic purposes by corrupting digital data and physically manipulating electronic device in the hopes of sending a message that is interpreted differently by each viewer. Heres how it works: The gif is on my blog, you see it on a medium, it translates a visual message, you interpret, therefore medium = message.

To my own understanding of Marshall Mucluhan’s theory is that the internet and its content has 3 paradigms. Past, present, future and the ripple effect it has on its consequent next. First we have the 2000s. In this decade, Google ignited the first shift of the world wide web. Then the 2010s roll in, and before you know it, everything you eat, breathe and see is documented socially. Once again, the paradigm shifts. Now we approach the present and question what subsequently will bring our online community together as a whole.
